CHAPTER SIX

‘I’M GOING SHOPPING in Marseille tomorrow for my bridesmaid dress,’ Kristina told Claire over the phone. ‘I’ll take photos if I find something special and email them to you for your approval.’

‘Whatever you’re happy with I’ll like,’ Claire replied. ‘Have you docked already?’

‘The city lights are getting closer by the minute.’ She leaned on the rail in the space on deck and wished there was something more exciting to look forward to than buying a dress. Which was grossly unfair to her new friend. She dug deep for enthusiasm. ‘Is sky blue still your colour of preference?’

‘Unless you think you’ll look hideous in it then yes. It’s fashionable this season so it shouldn’t be hard to find something.’

‘If I don’t have success here, I can try Nice or Genoa.’

‘Remember to get something sexy, blow Chase’s socks off. And his boxers.’

Kristina laughed hollowly. ‘Yeah, right.’ Her palm rubbed the scar line on her thigh.

‘Kristina? Are you all right? Is something wrong?’

The concern in Claire’s voice nearly undid her. ‘I’m fine. Truly. With three days’ leave about to start, why wouldn’t I be?’

‘Because you’ll miss Chase.’

‘Says who?’

‘You weren’t listening.’ Claire paused. When Kristina neglected to fill in the silence, she continued, ‘Still fancy him?’

‘Yep.’

‘The two of you need to get on with it, work whatever this is that you’re denying out of your systems. Or make it something that’s impossible to walk away from.’

This time Kristina was quick to speak, afraid of what else her friend might have an opinion on. ‘Forget writing for an agony aunt column, you should try writing a romance. You’ve got the talent for making up stories.’ Impossible to walk away from? She was already starting to think leaving Chase at the end of her twelve weeks was going to be hard.

This time Claire didn’t laugh along with her. ‘What’s the problem? You’re not sounding one hundred percent happy, so spill.’

Kristina glanced around, mindful Chase would come out here once he’d finished his paperwork. She was alone. But then her extra-sensory perception had already told her that. Chase only had to step onto the deck and her body would thrum with excitement. ‘He invited me to go home with him. It’s his mother’s birthday and there’s a party planned.’

‘That’s wonderful. You’ll have a great time. Don’t you already know his sister and her family?’

‘You weren’t listening,’ she remonstrated. ‘I’m staying at the hotel MFA has booked in Marseille to go sightseeing and shopping.’

‘Come on, Kristina. Take this opportunity to have some fun. As in real, let-your-hair down fun.’ Her laughter was naughty and left nothing to Kristina’s imagination about what that fun should be.

She wanted to agree, to accept Chase’s invitation and enjoy herself without worrying about getting a job or finding the right dress for the wedding or whether she’d ever find a town to call home. But the consequences? Suddenly she said, ‘I was hasty in turning him down.’ Then hadn’t known how to retract without showing Chase how her increasingly mixed emotions were screwing with her head.
